Kata benda dapat digolongkan menjadi tiga, yaitu :

1. Kinds of nouns (macam kata benda)

2. Types of nouns (jenis-jenis kata benda)

3. Number of nouns (jumlah benda-benda)

1. Kinds of nouns

Dibagi menjadi dua, yaitu :

A. Abstract Nouns

Development / Perkembangan

Truth / Kebenaran

Friendship / Persahabatan

Belief / Kepercayaan

Brother-hood / Persaudaraan

B. Concrete Nouns

Terdiri dari :

a. Proper Nouns : Bali, Reza, Cairo

b. Common Nouns : ruler, boy, truck, soap

c. Collective Nouns : people, family, team

d. Material Nouns : copper, silver, gold

2. Types of nouns

Dibagi menjadi dua, yaitu :

A. Countable Nouns / Kata benda yang bisa dihitung : cat, house, pencil, Jojo, Vito, Jakarta, etc

B. Uncountbale Nouns / Kata benda yang tidak bisa dihitung : sugar, paper, tea, money, etc

3. Number of nouns

Dibagi menjadi dua, yaitu :

A. Singular Nouns / Kata benda tunggal : a chair, a uniform, an umpire, an hour, an information center, etc

B. Plural Nouns / Kata benda jamak : teeth, geese, mice, people, children, flowers

Plural Form of Nouns :

1. Nouns + s : books

2. Nouns berakhiran s, x, z, ch, sh + es : classes, boxes, buzzes, churches, brushes

3. Irregular plural forms : man-men, woman-women, mouse-mice, tooth-teeth, child-children

4. Nouns berakhiran y, huruf y berubah menjadi i + es : baby-babies

5. Nouns berakhiran y, namun huruf sebelumnya huruf vokal (a,i,u,e,o) + s : key-keys, boy-boys

6. Nouns berakhiran f / fe, huruf f berubah menjadi v + s/es : leaf-leaves, knife-knives

7. Pengecualian dari nomor 6 diatas : chief-chiefs, roof-roofs

8. Nouns singular berakhiran o, namun huruf sebelumnya huruf konsonan + s / es, dengan ketentuan :

- Benda-benda buatan manusia + s : photo-photos, radio-radios

- Benda-benda bukan buatan manusia + es : tomato-tomatoes, potato-potatoes

- Pengecualian :

Mosquito-mosquitos/mosquitoes

Tornado-tornados/tornadoes

Scarf-scarfs/scarves

Zero-zeros/zeroes

9. Kata benda majemuk / kata benda gabungan (Compound nouns), yang dijamakkan hanyalah kata dasarnya saja : boy-friend - boy-friends, father-in-law - fathers-in-law, step-mother - step-mothers

10. Bentuk singular = bentuk plural : deer-deer, sheep-sheep, fruit-fruit

11. Some Nouns that English has borrowed from other languages, have foreign plurals :

Bacterium-bacteria

Cactus-Cacti/cactuses

Phenomenon-phenomena

Stimulus-stimuli

Basis-bases

Vertebra-vertebrae

12. Semua kata benda yang tidak memenuhi persyaratan diatas, pada dasarnya cukup + s : cat-cats, cow-cows, chair-chairs, spoon-spoons
